How to Choose the Right Art for Your Space

Let’s talk about art. Whether you're styling a blank wall or refreshing a room, choosing the right art can completely change the feel of a space. But I know it can be tricky—size, color, placement—there’s a lot to think about! So here’s my simple guide to help you pick the perfect piece every time.

  1. Start With How You Want the Room to Feel
Art has so much power to influence the mood of a space. Do you want the room to feel calming? Go for soft, muted tones or abstract pieces. Looking for something bold and energizing? Try vibrant colors or graphic prints. Think about the energy you want to create first.

  2. Size Matters (More Than You Think)
Too-small art can look like an afterthought. For larger walls, go big or consider a gallery wall. A good rule of thumb: artwork should take up about two-thirds to three-fourths of the available wall space. Over a sofa or bed, make sure it spans at least half the width of the furniture below it.

  3. Let Your Color Palette Guide You
You don’t need to match your art exactly to your room, but it should complement the existing colors. I like pulling one or two tones from the art and repeating them in accessories like pillows, throws, or decor to create harmony.

  4. Mix Styles for a Collected Look
Don’t be afraid to mix mediums—photography, painting, line drawings, even textiles or mirrors. Layering styles makes your space feel more curated and less like a showroom. Just keep one element consistent (like color, tone, or frame style) to tie it all together.

  5. Trust Your Gut
If you love it, that’s reason enough. Art should speak to you, remind you of something you love, or just make you smile when you walk by. Don’t overthink it—this is one area where personal taste truly shines.

  6. Frame It Right
Framing can elevate even the simplest piece. Choose a frame that complements both the art and your space. Floating frames, natural wood, or sleek black are my go-tos. And don’t forget the power of a great mat—it can make a print feel way more high-end.
