The One Thing Every Room Needs (That Most People Forget)
Hey friends—Jess here! If there's one thing I always look for when I walk into a space, it’s this: a sense of warmth and personality. And so often, it’s missing. We can have the perfect furniture, beautiful paint colors, and all the right finishes—but without this one essential layer, a room can still feel… flat.
So what is it?
Texture.
Yep. Texture is the secret ingredient that brings a space to life. It adds depth, dimension, and that cozy, “I want to stay here” feeling. And here’s the best part—it doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive to do.
Here’s how I love to layer in texture:
1. Pillows & Throws
Mix up materials like linen, velvet, chunky knits, and faux fur. Even in neutral tones, combining different textures makes a room feel curated and inviting.
2. Natural Elements
Woven baskets, wooden accents, stoneware vases—these little touches ground a room and give it soul. I especially love using raw woods or organic shapes to soften a more modern space.
3. Layered Rugs
If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I’m big on rugs! A flat-weave under a plush wool or sheepskin rug? Yes please. It instantly adds warmth and interest to a space.
4. Wall Finishes & Art
Think beyond flat paint. Grasscloth wallpaper, textured plaster, or even a wood accent wall can transform your space. And don’t forget art—canvas, fabric, or even 3D sculptural pieces add that tactile element.
5. Lighting That Adds Mood
Lighting is a texture in itself. I love mixing metals, using lamps with ceramic or stone bases, and adding a soft-glow bulb for warmth. It’s all about layering, not matching.
So if your space feels a little “meh” and you can’t quite put your finger on why—check the texture! It’s often the missing piece. And if you need help pulling it together, I’d love to help you layer it all in just right.
xo,
Jess
