Getting Organized for Fall & the Holidays: My Seasonal Prep Routine

Hey friends, it’s Jess! As we head into my favorite time of year—fall and the holidays—I like to take a little time to reset, get organized, and create a cozy, welcoming space for all that’s to come. Between back-to-school, cooler temps, and a packed calendar of gatherings, now’s the time to get ahead of the chaos and create a home that feels calm and ready for the season.

Here’s how I like to get organized and set the tone before the busy months hit:

  1. Do a Seasonal Declutter Before I bring in all the cozy textures and festive decor, I like to take stock of what we already have and do a quick declutter. I go room by room and donate anything we no longer use—especially in high-traffic areas like the mudroom, pantry, and coat closet.

  2. Rotate & Refresh Decor Out go the light summer linens and in come the warm tones and textures. I start by rotating pillow covers, throws, and tabletop accents. Then I’ll slowly add in some fall decor—think pumpkins, faux stems, and amber candles. Once November hits, I start thinking about layering in holiday touches too!

  3. Prep Guest Spaces If we’re hosting during the holidays, I use early fall to spruce up guest rooms—fresh sheets, an extra blanket at the foot of the bed, and a little tray with water, snacks, and a phone charger make it feel extra thoughtful.

  4. Organize the Kitchen & Pantry Cooler weather = more time spent cooking and hosting! I like to do a quick pantry refresh, take inventory of baking essentials, and make sure my go-to cookware is clean and ready. I also prep a coffee/hot cocoa station—it’s a fun touch for guests and a cozy treat for us too.

  5. Create a Seasonal Command Center I keep our schedule, invitations, and school papers in one place to help me stay on top of everything. A big wall calendar or digital planner helps me keep track of events, deadlines, and meal planning.

  6. Stock Up on Hosting Essentials This time of year often brings impromptu get-togethers, so I keep a few staples on hand: candles, a bottle of wine, frozen appetizers, and fresh hand towels for the powder bath. It makes hosting feel simple and stress-free.
